WASHINGTON & OLD DOMINION TRAIL BRIDGE INSPECTION
WASHINGTON & OLD DOMINION TRAIL BRIDGE INSPECTION
This three beam steel bridge with masonry substructure crosses Goose Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River in northern Virginia. The bridge was originally built by the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad and has since been converted into a multi-use pedestrian bridge and carries a part of the W&OD Railroad Regional Park Trail – a 45 mile asphalt surface, 10 foot wide trail.
A device called a beam roller was used to inspect the superstructure. This device, design by Burgess & Niple, is an aluminum bracket with wheels used to roll along the bottom flange of steel beams. The beam roller is adjustable to fit different beam sizes and has an attached grillion from which an inspector hangs to get hands-on access to the beam and connections as he moves himself (herself) along the beam.
