RAVENSWOOD TRAIN STATION - METRA/UPRR NORTH LINE
RAVENSWOOD TRAIN STATION - METRA/UPRR NORTH LINE
RS&H was the structural consultant for the design-build replacement of eleven bridges, new retaining walls along the 3.5 miles of relocated track, and a new Ravenswood Train Station as part of the METRA/UPRR North Line railroad improvements. The project is being built in phases while maintaining two operating tracks. Ravenswood Station consists of a terminal beneath the active railroad, stairwells, loading platforms on either side of the tracks, and warming shelters. The station ticket agent and vendor space is founded on pile caps utilizing drilled shafts. The remainder of the station is founded on pile caps supported by H-piles.
Types of permanent and temporary retaining walls designed for this project included steel sheet piling with a single row of tieback anchors, sheet pile dead man anchors, CIP concrete walls, and steel soldier pile walls with wood lagging and a precast concrete fascia. All structures were designed for railroad surcharge and earthquake loads in accordance with AREMA and railroad standards.
Personal responsibilities on the project included the preliminary design of retaining walls, support of excavation walls, train station bridge foundation, and assistance in development of the contract plans.
