ST. JOHNS RIVER FERRY CONDITION ASSESSMENT
The St. Johns River Ferry (Mayport Ferry) is an automobile transport ferry that crosses the St. Johns between Mayport and Ft. George Island near the mouth of the river where it meets the Atlantic Ocean in North Florida. In one capacity or another, the ferry has been operational since 1874.
The current structural fender system is composed of multiple steel pile box structures and slip walls that form a trumpet shape open to the river, to receive the vessel. Originally built in the 1950’s with multiple fender repair and component replacement projects over the years, the system has endured rough environmental conditions being so close to the ocean, with heavy salt content and strong tides.
The purpose of this project was to utilize previous inspection reports and past rehabilitation plans along with the results of a conducted field inspection to identify and prioritize sections of the fender system for rehabilitation in a systematic manner so as to minimize disruption to the existing ferry service.
